I have a Ph.D. in Physics and have served in a tutoring/teaching role for about 15 years total, including 7 that I spent as a teaching assistant at Penn State University. As a tutor, I have worked primarily online and have become proficient at helping students in this convenient setting.
During my time, I have cultivated my ability to engage students, encourage their systematic thinking and problem solving skills and help them comprehend the material conceptually. I have seen a wide variety of physics and calculus problems, including challenging ones, on all major areas of the standard high school and college curricula including Physics 1 and 2 (calculus-based and algebra-based) and Calculus 1 and 2. I am also happy to help students with more advanced courses.
An important part of my service is to speak to my students in ways they can understand and relate to and that reduce the sense of anxiety they may feel toward the subject matter. I use a Socratic teaching style that poses teaching questions to students, which engages them, boosts their confidence, and aids with comprehension and retention. By using these methods, I often see students, who may have been frustrated in the past, start to experience these subjects in a positive way.
One of the things math and physics teachers want to see in their students is the ability to think systematically and figure things out for themselves. Many of the problems that find their way onto tests and homework are designed to see which students can really do this and which ones can't. By removing the obstacles to this natural ability that everyone shares, I can help you or your student unlock your potential for success.
I appreciate your taking the time to look at my profile. Please don't hesitate to contact me for more information or to schedule a lesson.

Algebra 2,
Algebra 2
I have a doctoral degree in physics, which requires extensive use of the skills and methods learned in Algebra 2, and I have about 9 years cumulative experience assistant teaching and tutoring, including 2 year's experience doing 1-on-1 tutoring specifically in Algebra 2. I have worked with both high school students and college students studying at this level. My students have said that working with me has increased their self-confidence as learners and sense of ease with the subject matter.
Calculus,
Calculus
I received a doctorate in Physics in 2015, which required me to apply calculus methods at length. I have a total of approximately 8 months experience tutoring students in calculus at the AP high school level and at the college level. I am happy to tutor students in AB and BC AP Calculus, college-level Calc 1 and 2 as well as Differential Equations and Vector Calculus, which are often taken in the third and fourth semester in college.
Physics,
Physics
I have a Ph.D. in Physics from Penn State University that I received in May 2015. While studying for my degree, I worked as a teaching assistant for Penn State---instructing physics students at both the 1-on-1 and the group level. Penn State gave me an award for my performance in this role. Since my degree, I have tutored physics on the high school, college and graduate levels.
Precalculus,
Precalculus
Throughout my time studying for my undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics, I regularly applied methods from precalculus to solve physics problems. As a graduate teaching assistant, I taught undergraduates to use these methods to solve physics problems as well. I have been tutoring pre-calculus for about 8 months.
SAT Math
SAT Math
I received an 800 (perfect score) on the math section of the SAT when I took the exam and a perfect score on the math section of the GRE (taken before graduate school) as well. During my time as a teaching assistant at Penn State, I regularly used and taught skills that the SAT math section is designed to test. I have about a year's experience tutoring high school math and have spent about six months tutoring SAT Math.

Trigonometry
Trigonometry
Trigonometry is a skill set that is central to the discipline of physics, which is my area of expertise. I have worked with one student so far specifically on trig. He says that my explanations of the material are down-to-earth and help him to make sense of it. While studying for my bachelor's and then my doctorate degree in physics, I regularly used and applied the central definitions, functions and identities of trigonometry. When I tutor students in physics and calculus, trig functions and identities come up often.

He's a gem.
Garrett knew what my student needed and, despite starting late in the game, he got it done in time for the GRE! We could not be more pleased. Thank you, Garrett!

Lifesaver!
Is your child failing AP Calculus? Have they & their teacher given up on them(self)? If yes, Garrett will be their lifeline back to confidence & knowledge. In all seriousness, our A/B honor roll son was failing AP Calc. He’d lost hope he could ever learn calculus & his teacher had given up on him. Garrett took the time & had the patience to work with our son to explain concepts he missed in school & redirect him when he got lost. We are so impressed & our son is so happy to finally be learning that we’ve booked Garrett for an additional 8 hours in the next few days. Garrett even opened his immediate schedule for hours of additional tutoring. Honestly, book Garrett. You’ll be so thankful you did. One very grateful mom.
