The 11 best bars and drinks in South Shields (2024)

The Harbour Lights pub is a fantastic establishment known for its traditional cuisine and selection of beverages. Recently reopened under new management, it is now owned by the same individuals who run Log Fire Pizza Co van. Currently, the pub is open for drinks and customers can enjoy delicious pizzas from their mobile pizza van parked outside. The prices are affordable, with each pizza costing less than 10 units of currency. The staff members are friendly and create a warm and inviting atmosphere for all visitors.

Headed to Harbour Lights for a breakfast, we were given a table at the large windows overlooking the Tyne and North Sea. We ordered two full English breakfasts with tea and orange juice. It didn’t take very long to arrive and it was everything we needed. Great service with no fuss. Got to say this is total value for money and we will definitely be back for more. I might attempt the Belly Buster next time

Very warm, welcoming and friendly staff.Although we didn't eat there this time the food looked fantastic. The views over the Tyne estuary, out to the North Sea, looking over South Shields, Fish Quays and Tynemouth, are amazing.Would fully recommend a visit.

Came here for lunch with friends. Food was amazing, we all enjoyed it. All the staff were amazing and super friendly. Service was quick even though it was Easter Monday and the place was full.

We really enjoyed the food here. The nachos were the best we've had since moving to the UK 1.5 years ago! The fish in their Harbour pie was cooked perfectly. Very friendly staff.

Another beautiful meal at the revamped Harbour Lights. Micheal and the chefs have brought this pub back to life and a big well done to all. A great asset for the Lawe Top. We had homemade fish cakes for starters, Mrs B had the monkfish curry and I had the Gurnard in a cajun sauce. All the fish are sourced from North Shields fish Qua and can differ each day. The service was excellent polite and welcoming. The venue was busy and walk-ins arewelcome. We would recommend booking a table especially on a Sunday when it is very busy. I have added some photos of our roast dinner from a previous visit. We highly recommend this gastro pub. We'll done Michael and staff.

Visited for a family Sunday lunch. The food is plentiful and the meat is all lovely. Fetherblade beef and pork belly both highly recommended. Some lovely classic desserts too - crumble and sticky toffee pudding for us 😋

It's a nice pub with a good atmosphere and really friendly staff but, unfortunately, the reason we visited was for food (Sunday lunch, in our case) and it was a letdown.Who serves mushy peas with a roast dinner?!The chicken was super dry, so dry it was inedible, and the beef was disappointing too. The sticky toffee pudding was warm on one side and still cool on the other.

You had to know this place was there because it's fairly well hidden. Went there early eve around 5pm midweek for a dinner, service was very good, they carry a cider I like so it was looking good. I had the burger, my partner had the roast pork. Mine was OK, very filling, even left some chips, my partners pork meal was also good but she would of liked some more veg and possibly apple sauce? A nice clean well presented gastro pub well worth the climb up the steps.

My Husband my Son and I dined here this evening on a recommendation from Sister In Law we were not disappointed my Husband and Son both had the Tomahawk Steak with the best proper chips you could ever have, they both said the Steaks were the best pieces of meat they had eaten huge portions, I had smoked fish with creamy mash, poached egg (cooked perfectly) with a sauce I can only describe as heavenly, will highly recommend The Harbour Lights to everyone. We booked in for Sunday lunch on our way out.Staff super friendly and couldn't do enough for us and the whole experience was a joy. Thank you all for an amazing meal and a very warm welcome.

The fact there were novegetables was outweighed by the brown slime in the gravy. At first I thought that they had put brown sauce all over my mince!

Reserved a table for 3 people and 2 dogs ordered 2 starters and 3mains all the food was freshly cooked and delicious the cheese burger was delicious according to my daughter and the sea bass was delicious I had the fish and chips and peas I didn't realise they did a small fish until they brought out a (small) portion on the next table (it definitely wasn't small) when mine came I knew it was going to be a struggle even though it was delicious. We had to ask for half to be wrapped up to later be eaten by 2 very eager spaniels. I will definitely be going back in the very near future the whole experience /food /service /price was fantastic thank you Sam and Andy

Managed to book a table for lunch after hearing good reports from friends. We were not disappointed, the food being served looked stunning so we went for the fish and chips, I say fish it was more like a whale, it was huge, proper chips and mushy peas, it was delicious and the portions were huge. We will definitely return.
